The composition of this print is loosely based on an earlier painting of the same subject by Rembrandt dating to 1625 (Lyon, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon). Although some of the details derive from that work, Rembrandt made drastic changes in the arrangement of the figures and made their body postures and facial expressions more lifelike, all resulting in a far more dramatic scene.
Strong impression without wear and before any rework, printed evenly and sharply, slightly thin paper at the corners verso, further in very good condition. A first state of such a fine impression is rare.
